IMEO MARS

Project Aerosol

The United Nations International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is setting up a Methane Alert Response System (MARS) to support governments and businesses to reduce their methane emissions as promised under the Methane Pledge. SRON is one of the core partners of MARS. It will support mitigation efforts by using TROPOMI satellite data to find methane hot spots around the world and to help guide the high-resolution satellites that provide facility-level emissions.

TROPOMI methane data averaged over 2019-2020 shows a number of hot spots along the coast of West Turkmenistan. Zooming in with high spatial resolution satellites showed that many of the underlying sources are non-burning flares (Irakulis-Loitxate, 2022).
